On our last afternoon in Victoria, after we’d slogged through blustery winds and torrential rain for our Valentine’s weekend getaway, the clouds lifted for an hour as we walked around Laurel Point on the waterfront path past our hotel. Our destination: Float Home Village, a colorful community literally “on the bay,” including guaranteed sea views and rock-you-to-sleep tidal swells.
We discovered there is a difference a houseboat, which can relocate under its own steam, and a float home, which needs help moving. Most of the dwellings here are float homes, hooked up to city power and water/sewer. The residents welcome visitors strolling the docks, and seem to enjoy a quirky, communal lifestyle. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
A few avian residents said hello. These oyster-catchers were busy snapping up goodies at the water’s edge.
And this heron hunched near the float homes, keeping an eye on us. They always look glum, even when the sun is out!
As the clouds and driving rain closed in again, we scurried back to the Inn at Laurel Point for warm towels, a change of clothes, and a delightful gourmet dinner, watching the storm sweep across the harbor.
We raised our Valentine’s Day champagne glasses in a toast to Victoria and Beautiful British Columbia.
