The Rambling Writer’s Italy, part 11: Florence Overview

Highlights of Florence, the city of arts, with Thor and me.

NOTE: Since travel is still on hold with the pandemic continuing, I’ve started a new blog series offering a virtual vacation and time-travel to my first big trip with Thor in 2008. Italy! Starting with highlight photos posted here on Saturday, Jan. 30, I’ll continue every week. Join us in Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, Venice, and Milan. Buon viaggio!

The Rambling Writer just got kidnapped by Thor, who insisted it was time for R&R and a trip to Hawaii (super safe with pandemic precautions). I’ll return with your Italy virtual vacation soon! Meanwhile, some highlights of Florence:

The stunning Duomo:

And the rather gruesome paintings of the Last Judgement in the dome:

Painters still thrive here:

The River Arno:

Enjoy life!

  1. Stunning is right!

Sheryl and I honeymooned in Italy in 2004, visiting Rome, Florence and Venice. I remember walking down the Via De Martelli from our hotel, reaching the edge of the Piazza del Duomo, and literally having to stop while I picked my jaw up off the pavement and reattached it. I’d seen pictures and read Brunelleschi’s Dome, but seeing it in person was truly breathtaking.

We did the climb to the top of the dome, possibly not the wisest decision in early September. Thankfully water and gelato were both easily located when we got back down.

    1. Thanks, Gary. Yes, we climbed that dome in very hot September, too. The Last Judgement at the top was really graphic!
