The Rambling Writer’s Quest for Home, part 17: Gorgeous Granite!

Progress continues on the dream home for Thor and me as the gorgeous granite slabs we selected find their places on counter tops and more.

NOTE: People have been asking to follow our progress as Thor and I pursue our quest for our dream home with sunsets over the Salish Sea. So starting with my post of 5/21/22, we set out.

This post finds me a week out from my second neurosurgery, which hopefully has corrected the stenosis that was missed in the December surgery. I’m still feeling puny, so I’ll keep this post brief. Thor and I are thrilled to see the cut granite finding their places in our new house, including the extra piece above that will become a picnic table for our deck.

Back to the source: Thor and our builder Meshak drove back to Canada to pick up the cut pieces. Below, the kitchen island piece.

I had to laugh at the over-the-top laundry room counter top — I never expected such luxury in that room, but Meshak said why not use the extra granite?

I love the softly swirling granite in the master bath:

Meshak even ordered small corner shelves for the two showers:

Here are the shelves mounted in the master bathroom shower:

The kitchen is coming together, waiting for the appliances to be installed.

Geologist Thor is fascinated by the different swirling components of this granite slab. Since he is the cook, the kitchen is his domain, and he can hardly wait to go into action here.

My domain is the kitchen sink and dishwasher, with ocean view.

Meshak kept thinking of new ideas to create more work for himself as he added special touches to the house. Here, he took extra pieces to create a gorgeous fireplace mantel. The dark garnet tones match the color of the tiles that will cover the fireplace surround.

“And how about a bench in the mud room with this extra piece?” Meshak asked. “Yes, please!” we answered. We think he is as excited about this project as we are.

We can hardly believe that move-in date is end of May, after the long delays for permitting before we could start building. We still have finishing details to complete, but all systems are GO!
