Happy Halloween with Birch Bay Trick-or-Treating on the Berm!

Our funky Birch Bay community does it again – Trick-or-Treating on the Berm!

I grew up enjoying family visits to our “far corner” beach in Northwest Washington, where sandy beaches are rare along the mostly rocky coast. In an unexpected twist of life after I returned from my global rambles to my roots as a fourth-generation Northwest Washington native, I ended up building a waterfront house with Thor just north of Birch Bay.

This beach community has been a magnet for summer crowds for over a hundred years, formerly boasting a carnival and golf course as well as summer cottages. Now it’s sprouted condos and a housing development, but many of the old summer cottages remain, producing an eclectic mix.

The constant is resident and visitor enthusiasm for celebrations, including July 4th fireworks, New Year Eve “Ring of Fire,” and New Year Polar Bear swim. This year, Thor and I were driving along the bay when we ended up enjoying the fun as adults and children gathered in costumes for early trick-or-treating on the bayside berm. Various groups had set up pavilions with spooky themes, handing out treats. Some of the costumes defied identification, but here’s a sampling I snapped as we drove past.

Boo!
