The Rambling Writer’s Quest for Home, part 10: A Roof Over our Heads

Progress continues as our Dream Home acquires a roof and more.

NOTE: People have been asking to follow our progress as Thor and I pursue our quest for our dream home with sunsets over the Salish Sea. So starting with my post of 5/21/22, we set out.

My last update was December 10, and a lot has happened in the meantime. The framers have been busy getting the walls up, interior and exterior.

We love the way the great-room windows frame the view over the Salish Sea.

Bear dog and his friend JJ checked out the view from the dining room toward the planned deck.

We are still agog at the view from the upstairs master bedroom.

My corner writing “aerie” is a dream coming true, and it will surely inspire many more novels.

Hurrah! (And I was hoping those agile roof framers didn’t take a wrong step.)

Our work crews have been amazing in cold and pouring rain, with a few blessed sunny days. They even worked through the start of this blizzard, but finally had to take a few days off when everything iced up. Out neighbor sent us this shot from her next door deck:

The framers and roofers were soon back at it.

We were excited to see the decks being framed. We will use them for as much outdoor living as we can pack in when the weather allows. The upper deck outside my writing office will have an impermeable surface, so it will shelter that portion of the lower deck for an outdoor eating area. Add our propane patio heater, and we’ll be good to go.

The lower deck will have a flooring of a beautiful tropical hardwood.

Thor is just as thrilled with his shop as I am with my writing aerie. He is eagerly making lists of all the projects he can tackle once he gets his tools back out of storage. He agreed to recreate on his shop walls some of the beautiful frescoes that he painted in our previous garage/shop, copies of Minoan frescoes we admired on Crete.

The front porch taking shape:

Windows will be arriving soon!

And the reward every day — a new view, depending on the weather and the light. The sound of the sea bids us good night.
